In 2019 we set out to see if it was possible to recreate the magic of the ‘virtual world’, an open-world multi-player experience that was popular in the mid to late 2010’s, but using only modern-day technological equivalents. We were, as far as we can tell, one of only a handful to have tried this by then.
As it turned out, it was possible. The need for Flash and other archaic and proprietary technologies had been superseded by the HTML5 stack, Node.js and a plethora of other open-source technologies.
During the initial Pestz experiment we were blessed to be joined by a number of early-access players who helped to shape the world, give feedback and test out our infrastructure. We thank those early players and the world could not have been made without them.
As of December 2019, the Pestz experiment has been offline.
Development of Pestz v2, a complete rewrite of the Pestz code-base, is underway. This will result in a stronger, stable, and scalable infrastructure that will help both players and developers alike for years in to the future. Please hold tight as we work towards relaunching sometime in the future. We promise the wait will be worth it.
To keep up to date on how development is fairing, please join the official Pestz discord – there’s an invite in the sidebar.
